Paid Summer Internships | 2018 ADHD Summer Treatment Program (STP) | Penn State Harrisburg Campus

Penn State Health is recruiting undergraduate and graduate students to work as paid interns in the 2018 ADHD Summer Treatment Program (STP) at the Penn State Harrisburg Campus in Middletown, PA. The STP is a treatment program for 7-11 year old children with ADHD that is implemented in a summer day camp setting. The STP has positive effects on the serious behavioral, social, and academic difficulties exhibited by children diagnosed with ADHD.

Interns will implement recreation-based therapy for children with ADHD. They will receive extensive training and experience implementing research-based interventions. Students with STP experience are often highly sought-after in graduate training programs in clinical psychology, social work, medicine and education. Past STP counselors have gone in to successful careers in all of these fields. Interns will be hired for one of two roles: (1) Lead Counselor or (2) Counselor.

Lead Counselors (hiring 2): These interns are typically graduate-level students from clinical psychology, school psychology, education, social work, or related programs experienced working with children. Lead counselors will work with 4 to 5 undergraduate counselors to deliver treatment to a group of 12 children with ADHD. Lead Counselors will oversee all aspects of treatment and will provide immediate supervision to undergraduate counselors. During staff training, Lead Counselors will also assist program staff members in training undergraduate counselors in the token economy/point system, time out procedures, social skills, and problem solving training procedures and review clinical records of the children with whom they will be working during the STP. Lead Counselors are paid $12 per hour.

Counselors (hiring 9): These interns are typically undergraduate students majoring in psychology, social work, education, or related fields. Counselors work together to implement treatment with small groups of children. Counselors implement behavior modification during recreational activities (e.g., soccer, softball, basketball) and also provide children social skills training, and problem solving training. Counselors also plan activities and design treatment modifications to meet the needs of individual children. Prior behavioral health experience with children not required. Counselors paid $10/ hour.

All aspects of the internships are supervised by licensed psychologists. Interns typically gain 200 hours of experience providing treatment directly to children. Opportunities or participating in behavioral parent training and in weekly didactics are also available (but not required).

Interns complete 2 weeks of training before the start of treatment and receive ongoing supervision. Intern training begins June 11, 2018. The STP runs from Monday June 25 and continues through Friday July 27th, 2018. The final week of employment (July 30 through August 3rd) will be used for program wrap-up (data management, report-writing, etc.). Interns typically work Mondays from 7:45 am until 6:30 pm, Tuesday through Thursday from 7:45 am to 5:30 pm, and Fridays from 7:45 am to 1:00 pm.
