Bat Lab Publishes Paper Showing Bats Predict Auditory Object Motion

Congratulations to Angie Salles, Clarice Diebold, and Cindy Moss for their recent publication in Proceedings of the National Academy of the Sciences. Their research has also been picked up by CNN. The paper shows that bats’ echolocation integrates acoustic snapshots over time to build prediction models of a moving auditory target’s trajectory, and enable prey capture under conditions of uncertainty. This work can inform future comparative work on auditory motion processing for animals and humans.
